Brasstronaut; FInd Then and See Them
A show unlike any we've had. I still cannot categorize there music and the only reason that's a problem is because I'm trying to describe it with words!
The music changed regularly; a club like beat that had the band and audience bobbing, occasionally experimental and almost spacey, occasionally jazz, sometimes rock, maybe a pinch of classical. Always solid. There's something refreshing about a song that shifts and changes key and tempo.
After a brief break, Brasstronaut came on and broke right into 'Requiem for a Scene' and 'Old World Lies' from their EP before heading into their new album's material. I was impressed by the individual musicianship (is that a word?), but most impressed with how it all came together. At times the Clarinet and Trumpets would be blazing away over complex bass lines and drums, with still more complexity added by the keyboards and effects and the guitar; it all worked together.
Tariq started everything off with an acoustic set of songs that are incredibly well written and under the guidance of his guitar abilities were really relaxing; perhaps to warm us up to what was to come. I really enjoyed a love song called 'Front Row Seat' and a song about an astronaut returning to earth with the line 'This Gravity is Bringing me Down'. Nice.
With the band on the tail end of a long tour and with Edo feeling under the weather the show could have been a flop. If you thought that you could not have been more wrong. The band collectively played clarinet, keyboards, bass (stand up and held), Flugelhorn, trumpet, EWind (crazy instrument), Glockenspiel, Drums, Electric Guitar, Lap Steel and Cow Bell.
In the end, the audience turned into fans. Many CDs were bought and it's not often that you see an audience putting money on the keyboards after because they figure it should've cost more!
Hopefully we can get them back before they're too big!
